AIDS Walk!
I'm going to be participating in the San Francisco AIDS walk next month, and am trying to raise $500 to go towards AIDS research, treatment and testing. I would greatly appreciate your support, in any amount! Even $5 or $10 will help me reach my goal. You can donate right online through my donations homepage. Thanks so much, everyone! It's nice to be finished with my defense so that I can spend a little more time on other worthy causes... Much love, Sarah |

Words
I was thinking the other day how great it is that some words describe both an object, and the thing that you do with that object. Like: wedge, pin, drink, fish and switch. What am I missing? Also, peruse means the opposite of what you think it means. |

Valkyrie
Valkyrie looks fascinating and that I want to see despite my inclination to boycott anything Tom Cruise lays hands on. But watch the trailer... does is shock anyone else that even when the protagonists are Germans and Nazis for chrissake, Hollywood won't give them the slightest hint of a German accent? It's attractively edgy to have a good guy with a swastika on his arm, but a German accent would have apparently crossed the line. |

Digg
We were the number 1 story on digg science this morning! (we've since been beaten out by life on Saturn, but we're still #2) The comments are pretty dang hilarious. God bless you, Internet 2.0 |

Music Collection Quantified In other news, Pseudobiceros hancockanus has rapidly become the stuff of legend in the Bay Area fencing universe. The mailing lists are all atwitter, and impregnation has become shorthand for victory ("What? You're having Mike's babies AGAIN?") I find it shocking, frankly, that I was the first to point out this marvelous quirk of the invertebrate world. |

AJE
I've started doing scientific editing for this company called American Journal Experts, proofreading scientific papers written by non-native English speakers. It's actually pretty fun and painless, pays well, and I think I'm rather good at it. After my first edit, my manager said: "You did an awesome job on this edit. If you keep up this level of editing, you will be among our top editors and will get all the work you can handle." Oh yeah! |

Why I'm Voting for Obama
Two weeks ago I was still undecided. But after some serious consideration, Obama is definitely my man. I certainly wouldn't mind either Obama or Clinton in office. There are things I like and dislike about each of them. But the reasons I'm choosing to vote for Obama boil down to this: 1. Obama is more electable. People vote on the person they "like" more. Obama is more likeable than Clinton. Even people who agree with her don't really like her, whereas Obama can touch the emotional depths even of people who don't agree with him. And Bill, I love you, but you've become a liability. 2. Obama is more neutral. Clinton is great, but she's a polarizing figure. People on the right hate her vitriolicly, like people on the left hate Bush. While I know that she would make an effective president, we need someone who can unite the country rather than dividing it further. Obama's relative inexperience is unfortunate, but it means that he doesn't have a lot of political baggage. He is a tabula rasa for America to hold up to the world. 3. Electing Obama sends a strong global message. If Clinton wins the presidency, we will have had two families reigning for 20 years. Electing Obama says that we as a country are ready for a change in our global perception. Obama spent much of his childhood outside of the US, and he understands global diplomacy. Though his having attended a Muslim grade school may be a liability, since the uninformed can be tricked into thinking he's a Muslim (he's not!!), I very badly want a president who can communicate with the Muslim world, and who understands the global perspective on a personal level. I'm making phone calls tonight, and I'll be holding signs in the morning! ****VOTE TOMORROW!!**** |
